What is a fixed (static) IP address?
A fixed IP address (also called a static IP) is a permanent, dedicated internet address assigned to your connection that never changes. Most home internet connections use a dynamic IP that changes regularly — which makes it impossible to reliably reach your home network from outside. A fixed IP solves this by giving your connection a permanent, consistent address.
Why do I need a fixed IP for my CCTV cameras?
To view your CCTV cameras remotely, your phone or laptop needs to know the address of your home network. With a dynamic IP that changes every few days, this address keeps shifting and your camera app loses the connection. A fixed IP gives your CCTV system a permanent address so remote viewing always works — from any country, on any device.
What is the difference between a fixed IP and a dynamic IP?
A dynamic IP changes every time your router reconnects to the internet — typically every few days. A fixed (static) IP never changes. Dynamic IPs are fine for general browsing and streaming where you initiate outbound connections. Fixed IPs are required for anything that needs to be consistently reachable from outside your network: CCTV, servers, VPNs, email hosting, remote desktop, and business system whitelisting.
Can I use a fixed IP for a self-hosted VPN in the Algarve?
Yes — this is one of the most common uses. A fixed IP is essential for hosting your own VPN server (OpenVPN, WireGuard etc.) at home. It ensures the VPN endpoint address never changes, so remote clients — your laptop, phone, or office devices — can always connect reliably to your Algarve network.

Do I need special hardware for a Lazer fixed IP?
In most cases, no special hardware is required — the fixed IP is assigned at the network level and your existing router will receive the same address each time it connects. For advanced setups (VPN servers, web hosting), basic port forwarding configuration on your router is needed. The Lazer support team can guide you through this.
